PHILADELPHIA – For some Hispanic students, complete the application process at universities can be doubly troublesome: they are required to balance the tasks of the secondary essays and interviews, and then translate everything for her parents who do not speak English.

Some universities venerable East Coast trying to alleviate that burden and attract a growing number of Hispanic students “by offering Spanish translations of their material on admissions and financial aid.

The Bryn Mawr College, an establishment elite liberal arts near Philadelphia, recently launched a Spanish version of its Web site and the prestigious University of Pennsylvania has begun to conduct some sessions in Spanish admission.

“These initiatives are really geared for families … to subtract some of the pressure on students,” said Jennifer Rickard, director of enrollment at Bryn Mawr.

The comfort level of the family is extremely important in the Hispanic community, where ties with parents are strong and where many feel uneasy with the idea of sending their children to a distant college, said Deborah Santiago, vice president for policy and Research Excellence in Education, based in Washington DC.

“Parents play a critical role at least in educational aspirations,” said Santiago. “My parents have not gone to college, but I said I would.”

Nationally, only 25% of Hispanics aged 18 to 24 years were in college in 2006. The figure is less than 32% of blacks, 44% of whites and 61% of Asian Americans, according to a report by the American Council on Education, but the same report found that Hispanic enrollment rose college 66% between 1995 and 2005.

New York – Students and parents will struggle this week against the closure of a secondary school in the Bronx with a large Hispanic population.

The Alfred E. Smith High School is the only school designated as Career and Technical Education in the South Bronx.

The center offers courses in technical studies such as automobiles, construction and carpentry for their students, most of them Hispanic.

In the city, only 30 schools with CTE designation.

The Alfred E. Smith has 1.086 pupils of whom 91% are men. 61% of students are Hispanic and 35% are African American, according to the latest data on the website of the Department of Education.

The city has announced the closure of 20 schools for their poor academic performance. The city announced its plan to close Smith last week along with two other schools, the Monroe Academy for Business / Law in the Bronx and the School of Business, Computer Applications and Entrepreneurship in Queens.

The department did not respond to calls from this newspaper. However, an email distributed among reporters for the department said Alfred A. Smith has had a graduation rate below 50% in recent years.

In the email, the department also noted that the attendance rate was very low at this school (77% last year) and has not been high demand for school.

The school received a grade of “C” in its annual assessment of the city during the past three years.

Scholarships

In general, scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement and financial need. Students also can receive a scholarship specialist recruitment, based on special skills such as musical, athletic or other. The office of financial aid and admissions personnel of the university will determine whether the student is entitled to these grants. Some students may qualify for various scholarships. The best scholarship that can receive are the assignments for several years. The multi-year scholarships are guaranteed for more than one school year provided the student maintains good academic standing. Some scholarships for several years can be guaranteed to any student’s academic career.

Although most grants are awarded scholarships and financial aid officers of the university, other types of scholarships and grants that are available for students. When many students seeking financial aid for college, they overlook that there are many national Hispanic organizations that offer scholarships. There are basic types of financial aid organizations such as the HSF (HSF), the LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), the American GI Forum (American GI Forum), the TACHE (Association of Chicanos in higher education in Texas), and HACU (Hispanic Association of Universities), among others. The NHSF (National Federation of state associations of schools) is the largest of these organizations and gives more than $ 3 million in grants annually to thousands of Hispanic students. (See the section “Grants” in this prospectus). The high school counselors also can help you find scholarship opportunities.

Grants

The grants, which usually come from state or federal funds, are very similar to those scholarships, but is usually granted only once and are often based on financial need. Grants can be renewed each year as long as they are available and students continue to meet the requirements. The leading provider of university subsidies for low-income students is the federal government.

Allocations Work Study

Allocations Work Study are otherwise known to obtain financial support for U.S. funding of higher education. Through Federal Work Study Program (Federal Program Work Study), Which receives funding from both the federal government and the school, students can gain valuable experience while working either on campus or off-campus positions that meet certain requirements. The works are scheduled for these students so they do not match the student’s homework during the regular academic year. By law, any student under the program Work Study can work over 20 hours a week. Students sometimes are eligible to work longer hours in summer or between semesters.

Allocations Work Study him give students a chance to gain management experience in the offices of the university, working in a community organization, or perform other jobs that meet student interests and to enrich the learning process. Federal allocations Work Study are based on financial need. The requirements for a student is entitled to an allowance Work Study must determine the financial aid office of the university.

The purpose of financial aid for college is to help all students who qualify to pay the rising cost of higher education. The time required to process an application for financial assistance is extended. Experts recommend that students make their application for financial aid at the university of their choice, even before they know whether or not they have received approval from that institution. There are several reasons for this, especially the fact that many financial aid officers exhausted its allocation of grants based on the idea that attention will be first come, first arrive. Many universities also offer more grants and private scholarships to students in their first and second year and then add more student loans later in his college career.

All persons who wish to go to college but who are not eligible must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA (Free Application for federal student aid). You can request this application for financial assistance in the financial aid office of any university in the FAFSA website (http://www.fafsa.gov) or can be filled online. The FAFSA requires financial information from both the student and parents. Because you will be asked to fill out a FAFSA every year, you should learn how to fill correctly. Most college students are familiar with the FAFSA, so be sure to ask for help.

Once the application for financial aid has been processed, students receive a Student Aid Report or SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is a summary of your order. Make sure all information is correct. If there are errors, fix them and return it as soon as possible. Even the smallest mistakes can change your rights to financial aid. Your SAR will be sent to schools of your choice. These schools will use the information on your SAR to determine your financial need and submit a financial aid offer. Your SAR will tell you the amount of the Estimated Family Contribution or EFC (Estimated family contribution). The EFC is the amount of money estimated that parents pay. This also determines the information you provide on the FAFSA.

The financial support offered by the university of your choice can list various resources, including a combination of grants, subsidies, allowances Work Study, Student loans and parent loans. Students are not required to accept the whole package and may even accept part of the package (like a scholarship) or refuse the other hand (as a student loan).

There are two main categories of financial aid, aid that does not require payment (such as grants and subsidies) and the support it requires payment (loans). Most student loans require payment from six months after the student finishes school or graduates. The parent loans and some student loans, require repayment while the student is in college. The scholarships, grants, allowances Work Study and research grants do not require payment.

For a student is entitled to receive financial aid are required to:

* He is admitted or enrolled at least half-time student
* The courses are directed to obtain a degree or certification
* Be a U.S. citizen. UU. or not, that meets the requirements
* Maintain a satisfactory academic performance
* Register for the Selective Service (compulsory military service), if required
* Do not have a federal student loan payment due and delinquent
* Have financial need (except for loans Unsubsidized Stafford Loans)

The Ambassadorial Scholarships Rotary International are one of the most exciting opportunities for students with fewer possibilities of being able to afford a scholarship and a lower number of eligible income to pursue their studies outside their home country, and afford them. Since the Foundation has been submitted and fortunate to benefit from these scholarships for the year 2008-2009.

Make a school, it costs much less than you think. Number of public institutions or universities is rather “cheap”. If the curriculum of engineering and business displays high fees, there are ways to lower the note.
Upscale courses at lower costs

From 6.000 to 9.000 € per year for tuition … Inaccessible, large schools pay? It is the opinion of many students and their families. Especially since the state grants provide only token support to students enrolled in private (read “What public support can you expect?” in the same folder). But do not throw in the towel too soon. All colleges have set up systems to help convince the most reluctant. And you will be among lucky recipients lot easier than you think. For the assessment of “social criteria” … remains very concerning. While the rate of stock CROUS (regional center of academic work and school) is only 11% of ME (School Management) Lyon, 6% at ESSEC (Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales) and 3% HEC [1], The rate of students receiving aid to finance their schooling in these schools, 41%, 45% and 29%!
The awards “home”: true exemptions

To help the least advantaged students, each institution has its formula “home”. Solidarity funds allow scholars CROUS or other students in need to receive a partial exemption of tuition, from 500 € per year. Others, such as SOMA (Catholic School of Arts and Crafts) Lyon, ESCOM (Ecole Superieure de Chimie organic and inorganic) Cergy-Pontoise, the ICAM (Institut Catholique d’Arts et Metiers), or Reims Management School, based on the companies, through their foundations to fund scholarships. The criteria for setting these awards are generally social, but academic excellence can be a weighty argument. The ESCP-EAP (European School of Management, Paris) grants and scholarships based on merit, on criteria of excellence. In ESIEA (College of Computer, electronics, auto) Ivry-sur-Seine, engineering students are eligible for merit scholarships for mobility (preparing for a double degree) that are granted only in accordance with academic criteria. The awards “house” and provide significant aid, up to a total exemption from annual fees. ESC (Business School) Amiens fee waiver for the first year fellows from the preparatory classes. ESC Montpellier ESC Dijon grant awards called “merit” or “excellence” providing tuition for the entire curriculum. However, these total form exemptions of scholarships are not the norm. “This is not our policy,” said Jacques Chaniol, director of ESC Tours-Poitiers. There is always an element of fees borne by the student, although it may be very low. ”

Landing a job with flexible hours in school

To support a large part of its curriculum, or all better bet on a scholarship, then one or two years of learning. Finally, a handful students having access to any of the existing devices are sometimes offered by their school jobs in timetables or “tutoring”. Subscription to a bank loan is the most common financing solution. However: many families resent the idea of debt for sums can be considerable. “Personally, I had not the ideal profile for a bank loan, estimated Sereen student at ESC Montpellier. The banks prefer students who have parents with a stable job and who are not earning the minimum wage … It must also be put in place a youth who says he will start his life with debts! “

The million children living in countries under development do not have access to this fundamental right. There are many reasons why children are denied access to education: the inability to pay for uniforms, cultural beliefs wishing that educating is frivolous, or even a need children work to support their families.

But repeatedly, Kilimanjaro Education Foundation are reminded the importance of education as an engine of development. The World Bank estimates that countries of South Asia and Africa losing up to one percent of their income per capita annually, compared to countries where children have better access to quality education.

More educated women delay their first pregnancies, have healthier children and are much more likely to send their children to school. For each additional year of schooling that girl will do, it will increase their family income to 20 percent. According to the United Nations Fund for Population, each additional year of schooling a woman is associated with a reduction of 5 to 10 per cent of infant mortality.

That’s why KEF is working to open schools with children, where they are taught everything from science to business, while preparing them to lead a new generation and helping children to develop the skills that they needed to get better living conditions for themselves, their families and communities.

Providing access to education for girls and kids from certain regions of the world where it was previously forbidden them, KEF helps them to release their full potential.

It must act now. You can help many other children in the world to have better access to quality education and thereby transform their lives. You can make a real difference. It has the power to change the world. You have the power to help him do so. Please donate to Kilimanjaro Education Foundation today!
